Most skin diseases not only cause uncomfortable symptoms such as itching, redness and unhealthy eruptions, they also affect the look of an individual. Psoriasis, characterized by excessive scaling/peeling of skin, is one such ailment, which at its worst, can be painful, disfiguring and debilitating.

According to Dr. S.P.S. Bakshi, CMD, Bakson Group, it is a problem with one’s immune system that causes psoriasis which he terms as Endogenic/Hereditary Allergy. This is the reason that it tends to run in the family. The scaly patches caused by psoriasis, are areas of inflammation which are raw and there is dryness with excessive skin proliferation. It usually appears between the age of 15 to 35 years and can even last a lifetime, treated through homoeopathy. Exogenic factors that tend to aggravate psoriasis include winter season, stress, infections, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.

One usually gets psoriatic patches on elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms and feet, but they can show up on other parts of the body too. Excessive dandruff is the first stage of psoriasis, says Dr. Bakshi. Though the lesions on the skin look scary, psoriasis is not contagious.

Suppressing psoriasis with medicated creams, UV radiation or injections only worsens the immunity of the body, thus affecting our respiratory, digestive system and joints. Psoriatic arthritis is one of the most painful forms of this disease. Hence, a holistic treatment with homoeopathy is called for.

The treatment should be followed for 3-5 years to prevent relapses and improve immunity.

Some of the commonly prescribed medicines are:

  • Arsenic Album 30: Psoriasis, itching eruption; dry, rough, scaly; worse cold and scratching
  • Kalium Sulphuricum 30: Sensitive , dry skin, burning after scratching.
  • Dr. Bakshi’s Homoeopathic Formula D Tablets: For psoriasis characterized by extreme dryness, cracks and excessive scaling. Take 1 tablet, once daily.
  • Dr. Bakshi’s B#23 Skin Drops: Helps relieve itching, eruptions and rashes. Take 10-15 drops diluted with some water twice weekly, i.e. once on Monday and Thursday.

All medicines are to be taken under the guidance of a Registered Homoeopathic Medical Practitioner.
